Things I Swore I’d Never Do as a Mom… That I Definitely Do Now

Before I had kids, I was the perfect parent… in theory.

I had opinions. Strong ones.
My kids would eat organic meals, never watch too much TV, always say “please” and “thank you,” and absolutely never throw tantrums in public.

And then… I had kids.

Now? Let’s just say motherhood has a funny way of humbling you real quick. Here are a few things I swore I’d never do as a mom… that I 100% do now.

1. “My Kids Will Never Eat Junk Food”

Reality: If it’s beige, quick, and they’ll actually eat it… it’s on the menu.

There was a time I imagined beautifully plated meals with vegetables my kids would magically love.
Now I’m just trying to make sure they eat something that isn’t three bites of air and a meltdown.

Chicken nuggets? Check.
Goldfish for the third snack of the day? Also check.
Calling it a “balanced meal” because there’s a fruit pouch involved? Absolutely.

2. “I Won’t Use Screens as a Babysitter”

Reality: “Go watch a show real quick so I can think.”

Listen… sometimes you just need 20 minutes of silence to:

  • Drink your coffee while it’s still warm
  • Answer one email
  • Or just sit and stare at a wall without someone touching you

And you know what? That show buys you sanity. No shame.

3. “I’ll Never Bribe My Kids”

Reality: “If you put your shoes on right now, you can have a snack in the car.”

Bribery? No.
✨Motivation✨.

We’ve all done it. And honestly, sometimes it works better than anything else.

4. “My House Will Always Be Clean”

Reality: Clean-ish is the new standard.

I used to think I’d stay on top of everything.
Now I celebrate:

  • A clear kitchen counter (for 12 minutes)
  • Matching socks (rare win)
  • Not stepping on a Lego

The house is lived in. And that’s okay.

5. “I’ll Never Raise My Voice”

Reality: I have, in fact, raised my voice… usually after repeating myself 47 times.

You go into motherhood thinking you’ll be calm, patient, and collected 24/7.

Then you hear:
“Mom. Mom. Mom. MOM. MOMMMMM.”

…and suddenly you understand why your parents yelled your full name across the house.

6. “I’ll Stick to a Strict Routine”

Reality: Survival mode > schedule.

Some days run like a well-oiled machine.
Other days? It’s chaos, snacks, missed naps, and bedtime negotiations.

And you know what? Everyone is still alive. That counts.

7. “I Won’t Let My Kids Sleep in My Bed”

Reality: Scoot over… we’re all tired.

At 2am, when your kid crawls in after a bad dream, all those “rules” go out the window.

Because sometimes comfort matters more than structure.

8. “I’ll Always Be Present and Patient”

Reality: I’m human… and sometimes I’m tired.

Motherhood is beautiful—but it’s also exhausting.

There are moments I’m fully present, soaking it all in.
And there are moments I’m counting down to bedtime.

Both can be true.

The Truth About Motherhood No One Tells You

You don’t become the mom you planned to be.
You become the mom your kids need… and the mom you’re learning to be in real time.

You adjust.
You grow.
You let go of perfection.

And somewhere in between the chaos, the crumbs, the noise, and the “just one more snack”…
you realize you’re doing better than you think.

If you’re doing things you swore you’d never do—welcome to motherhood. You’re in good company.

Give yourself grace.
Laugh at the chaos.
And remember… the “perfect mom” doesn’t exist—but a real, loving, trying mom? That’s everything.

💬 Let’s be honest—what’s something YOU swore you’d never do as a mom… that you totally do now? Drop it in the comments. Let’s normalize this together.
