Things I’ve Learned Since Trying Dry January
he start of the new year often brings a wave of resolutions, fresh beginnings, and for many, a commitment to Dry January. This year, I decided to give it a go, opting to cut alcohol completely for the month. What started as a simple challenge quickly turned into an eye-opening experience that has reshaped the way I think about alcohol, my habits, and my overall well-being.
Here are some of the biggest takeaways I’ve had since trying Dry January:

1. Better Sleep is a Game-Changer
I had heard that cutting alcohol could improve sleep, but I didn’t expect such a drastic difference. Without the occasional evening drink, I started falling asleep faster, sleeping more soundly, and waking up feeling truly rested. No more 3 AM wake-ups with a racing heart. It turns out that alcohol disrupts REM sleep, and once it was out of my system, my sleep quality improved dramatically.
2. Clearer Skin & Less Puffiness
One of the most surprising benefits? My skin looked healthier. Alcohol dehydrates the body, leading to dull skin, puffiness, and breakouts. Within a couple of weeks, I noticed a glow that no skincare product had ever been able to achieve on its own.
3. My Mood & Mental Clarity Improved
I didn’t realize how much alcohol subtly affected my mood. Cutting it out helped me feel more balanced, less anxious, and generally more in control of my emotions. My focus improved, and I felt sharper throughout the day.
4. Socializing Without Alcohol is Easier Than I Thought
At first, I worried about social situations. Would it be awkward? Would I feel left out? The truth is, it was much easier than I expected. I swapped cocktails for mocktails, sparkling water, or just a simple soda with lime. The best part? I still had fun, stayed engaged in conversations, and didn’t wake up regretting anything I said or did the night before.
5. Significant Savings
I had never tracked how much I spent on alcohol before, but once I stopped buying it, I realized just how much money was going toward drinks at restaurants, bars, and even casual weeknight wine purchases. The savings added up quickly and made me question whether alcohol was truly worth the cost.
6. Cravings Come and Go
There were definitely moments when I craved a drink, especially during times when I would normally unwind with a glass of wine or celebrate with a cocktail. But I learned that cravings pass. Finding alternative ways to relax, like drinking herbal tea, reading, or going for a walk, helped me rewire my habits.
7. Alcohol is More Cultural Than Necessary
One of the biggest revelations was how ingrained alcohol is in our culture. So many events, social gatherings, and even casual nights at home revolve around it. But stepping away made me realize that alcohol isn’t required to have a good time—it’s just something we’ve been conditioned to think is necessary.
8. I Feel More in Control of My Choices
Before Dry January, I didn’t think I drank excessively, but I did drink habitually. This experience helped me see that I have complete control over my choices. Whether I decide to continue drinking occasionally or keep alcohol to a minimum moving forward, I now know that I don’t need it to relax, socialize, or enjoy life.
9. NA Beer Has Come a Long Way
One thing I discovered during Dry January is how far non-alcoholic (NA) beer has come in terms of taste and availability. Many breweries now offer high-quality NA options that actually taste like the real thing. Whether it’s a craft IPA or a classic lager, there are plenty of great alternatives that allow you to enjoy the social aspect of having a beer without the effects of alcohol. If you need a recommendation, I highly recommend Go Brewing! They have a great selection, and they’re soooooo good!

Dry January started as a challenge but quickly became one of the best things I’ve done for my body and mind. I’m still reflecting on how I want to incorporate alcohol (or not) into my life moving forward, but one thing is for sure—this experience has given me a new perspective. If you’ve ever considered trying it, I highly recommend giving it a shot. You might be surprised at what you learn about yourself along the way.
