20+ Halloween Movies to Enjoy as a Family this Spooky Season

If you ask any child, more than likely one of their favorite holidays is Halloween. Some might argue that it ranks second to Christmas, but there’s no denying that most kids find Halloween alluring. If I had to guess, some of that allure would include the mere fact that Halloween includes dressing up as your favorite superhero or monster and causing mischief while trick-or-treating with friends and family. Then there’s the pumpkin carving and enjoying some Halloween movie classics, which is why I’m sharing some of the best Halloween movies to enjoy with family this spooky season.

Monster House (2016)

Three kids discover that the house across the street is a living, breathing monster.

Happy Halloween Scooby Doo! (2020)

This full-length Halloween movie stars Scooby and the gang as they join forces with Bill Nye and Elvira when toxic ooze creates an army of monstrous pumpkins. What kid doesn’t love a good Scooby Doo movie?

Spookley the Square Pumpkin (2004)

A scarecrow and a spider trio help an odd-shaped pumpkin overcome his feelings of shame and inadequacy. This is an important movie that shares teamwork and teaches kids a great lesson on friendship and encouragement.

Frankenweenie (2013)

Frankenweenie is a hilarious and heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life — with just a few minor adjustments.

Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

The Nightmare Before Christmas tells the heartfelt tale of Jack Skellington, the infamous Pumpkin King of Halloween Town. Bored with the same old tricks and treats, he yearns for something more, and soon stumbles upon the glorious magic of Christmas Town.

Corpse Bride (2005)

When a shy groom, played by Johnny Depp, practices his wedding vows in the inadvertent presence of a deceased young woman, played by Helena Bonham Carter, she rises from the grave assuming he has married her. Now he must fight for his life and for his true love.

 

ParaNorman (2017)

A boy who must use his ability to see and speak with the dead to save his town from a centuries-old curse. In addition to spooky zombies, he’ll also have to take on mysterious ghosts, wily witches and, worst, of all, clueless grown-ups.

 

The Boxtrolls (2014)

Quirky, mischievous and good-hearted, Eggs, lovingly raised by BoxTrolls below the bustling streets of Cheesebridge, finds himself, and his friend, Winnie, up against the evil Archibald Snatcher in order to save his beloved Boxtrolls.

Coraline (2009)

Coraline Jones is bored in her new home until she finds a secret door that leads into a world that’s just like her own … but better! But when this fantastical adventure turns dangerous and her “other” mother tries to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness and bravery to get home.

Casper (1995)

Ghost therapist” Dr. James Harvey and his daughter Kat arrive at drafty, old Whipstaff Manor. Its greedy owner, Carrigan Crittendon, has hired Dr. Harvey to exorcise the house’s apparitions: a friendly but lonely young ghost named Casper, who’s just looking for a friend, and his outrageous uncles Stretch, Stinkie and Fatso (The Ghostly Trio). If the plan works, she and her partner-in-crime, can get their hands on the manor’s fabled treasure. Meanwhile, Casper has found a kindred spirit in Kat, but The Ghostly Trio will not tolerate “fleshies” in their house.It’s both hilarious and heartwarming.

It’s the Great Pumpkin: Charlie Brown (1966)

Will this Halloween be the one when the Great Pumpkin comes? Longtime believer Linus thinks so, and keeps watch all night in the pumpkin patch to welcome him. Charlie Brown gets into the spooky spirit too, dressing up as a ghost with more eyeholes than needed, but not scaring up the usual kinds of Halloween loot when trick-or-treating. Never fear, World War I fighting ace Snoopy is here to battle the Red Baron, and in doing so, crash Violet’s Halloween party and Linus’ vigil as well. Your whole family will be glad it crashed this party. Good grief, you can’t help but have a happy Halloween! This movie is a family classic and will be for years to come!

Hocus Pocus (1993)

Three wild witches, who happen to be sisters,  return from seventeenth-century Salem for a night of zany fun and comic chaos. After they’re conjured up by unsuspecting pranksters, the tricky trio sets out to cast a spell on the town and reclaim their youth. But first they must outwit three feisty kids determined to foil their scheme.

The Haunted Mansion (2003)

Halloweentown / Halloweentown II

On her birthday, Marnie learns she’s a witch, discovers a secret portal, and is transported to Halloweentown — a magical place where ghosts and ghouls, witches and werewolves live apart from the human world. But she soon finds herself battling wicked warlocks, evil curses, and endless surprises.

Grandmother Aggie sweeps Marnie and Sophie off to Halloweentown to investigate a series of strange occurrences. When they arrive, the vibrant community seems to have lost its magic.

The citizens, including the gargoyles, are gray and boring. It isn’t long before Aggie discovers that her spell book is stolen and the trio decides to set out and find it.

They discover that an angry warlock has taken the book and plans to permanently turn every human into whatever costume they are wearing at midnight on Halloween. It’s a race against time, as Marnie must use her skills to defeat the young warlock threatening to change Halloweentown for eternity.

 

Tower Of Terror (2003)

Guests encounter a host of haunts in this delightfully spooky mystery! Buzzy Crocker is a hard-luck photojournalist whose unexpected encounter with an old woman leads him to investigate an unexplained, decades-old disappearance. It seems that one Halloween night, many years ago, five partygoers vanished in the elevator of the Hollywood Tower Hotel … and ever since, their ghosts have remained trapped inside the dilapidated old building!

The Addams Family (2019)

The Addams Family is back in their first animated comedy about the kookiest family on the block. Funny, outlandish, and completely iconic, The Addams Family redefines what it means to be a good neighbor. There’s also a second installment in this new animated series available now on Blue-Ray and DVD.

The Goonies (1985)

The treasure is in a cavern, but the entrance to the cavern is under the house of the evil thief family, the Fratelli’s.
